Here’s another installment in a series of emails that took place between Michael and one of his senior students beginning the Summer of 2009. May you find the exchange interesting and enriching.

Student: Where is freedom in commitment?

Michael: Mine or yours?

Student: Is there a difference?

Michael: Ah, very good. So where is there “no” freedom?

Student: When we think we’re winning?

Michael: No freedom in winning? Really? Freedom is at the core of all things. As such it is “thingless” or, we could just as easily say, it is the “thingness” of things. This means that it’s all freedom. Freedom is the essence of all, therefore it’s always here whether our minds perceive that we’re winning or losing.

Student: So even in commitment there is freedom.

Michael: Commitment, in the ultimate sense, is a vow to protect the sacred freedom that we all share.
