What Kind of Buddhism?

My friend gave me this article about the differences between the Eastern and Western versions of Buddhism. Thought it was both interesting, and a little unclear.

Is the West, for instance, diluting the core of the Dharma by making Buddhist practice about self-help? Should we look to the Eastern “humdrum” version as the exemplar? If we make the mistake of either looking to the Teaching as being only about community, or only about the self, we will fall into the various traps and snares of delusion. If, on the other hand, we study the self so thouroughly that we begin to see through it, we evolve. When this dropping of body and mind happens, either as individuals or as a group, each of our steps becomes the answer to prayer.
